Hip-hop and R&B mixing with the vocal in focus

Lead vocals, doubles, ad-libs and the beat have to form an intentional whole. A clear brief shows which details should come forward and which raw or effected qualities should be kept.

Is this the right request for you?

You have recorded rap or vocals over a beat and want to prepare clear mix material, from a single to several songs.

Not automatically included

Beat licences, sample clearance, songwriting and new vocal recordings are not automatically part of mixing. Check your rights to the material you send.

A finished beat or separate beat stems?

Tell us whether you have a stereo file of the beat or separate drums, bass and instruments. Separate files give more room to change how the beat sits with the vocal. With a fully processed stereo beat, some changes are more limited.

Send the correct beat version and say whether tempo or arrangement changed after the vocals were recorded. If the producer made a reference mix, include it and explain which parts of its sound matter for the song.

Organise lead vocals, doubles and ad-libs

Name lead vocals, doubles, backing vocals and ad-libs so their roles are easy to understand. Mark which takes are chosen and which are only alternatives. Editing many takes needs to be described as a request of its own.

Say whether tuning should be discreet or an obvious part of the sound. Send a reference for the effect you are after instead of assuming a specific plugin. Also mention effects that are already printed into the recording and cannot be removed from the file.

Plan the versions before approval

Clean, explicit, instrumental and a cappella versions may need different material and checks. A clean version should be planned with the lyrics and alternative takes in mind; muting a single word is not always enough.

Listen closely to the transitions between verse and chorus and to whether key words are audible. Collect comments with timecodes and say whether you want to change the vocal placement, the beat balance or a specific effect. Mastering and distribution need to be stated separately in the job.

Checklist for your request

  • Beat version, tempo and whether beat stems are available.
  • The chosen lead vocal and clearly named doubles and ad-libs.
  • A reference for the vocal sound and any tuning.
  • Need for clean, explicit, instrumental or a cappella versions.
  • Information about beat and sample rights, and your delivery deadline.

Price, scope, schedule, revision rounds and usage rights are confirmed for each job. Sending a request does not place an order. Our contact form is in Swedish, but you are welcome to write in English.

Describe your project and ask about a plan

Questions about mixing

Can a song be mixed from a stereo beat?

A request can start from a stereo beat plus separate vocal tracks. Describe the material; there is less room to change individual beat elements than with separate beat stems.

Are tuning and timing edits included?

That depends on the order. Describe which takes and what kind of expression you want so the editing can be covered by the quote and the schedule.

Does SWX Records clear the rights to my beat?

A mixing order does not automatically include licensing or sample clearance. You need to be able to describe the rights you hold and agree on any separate needs.
