Cover art for a single – from image idea to artwork

A good design brief connects the artwork to the song and states where the image will be used. Start with a clear brief rather than only asking for an image that stands out.

Is this the right request for you?

You are releasing a single and want to order artwork, or to work out which deliveries your visual idea needs.

Not automatically included

Photography, animated Canvas loops, ad creatives, print files and editable project files are not automatically part of a cover package.

Turn the feel of the song into a usable brief

Send a listening link and describe the mood, the motif and what the image should not express. A few references are enough when you explain what you like about them: composition, colour, texture or typography. References give direction; they are not material that may automatically be copied.

Give the final spelling of the artist name and song title, including any version. Say whether text should appear on the cover or whether the image should carry it alone. Late name changes can affect a layout that has already been approved.

Decide what the material may be used for

If you send photographs, logos or illustrations, state who holds the rights and how they may be used. Also mention whether people appear in the image and any special restrictions. Sending a file is not in itself proof of a right to use it.

Discuss usage, any exclusivity and which files are delivered before you order. A digital single cover is not automatically a print-ready file, and access to a final image does not automatically mean that editable source files are included.

Check the artwork before your distributor upload

Review the cover both large and as a small thumbnail. Check spelling, cropping and that an important detail does not disappear at the smaller size. Collect all notes before you approve the final version.

Your distributor and each receiving platform have their own image requirements. Spotify publishes requirements for image format, aspect ratio and colour handling, among other things. Check the current official specification and your distributor’s requirements instead of assuming that one export fits digital covers, print and social media.

Checklist for your request

  • A listening link, the final song title and the correct artist name.
  • Image idea, references and wishes regarding text.
  • Available photos or logos and the rights to use them.
  • Digital release, social formats or print – list every need.
  • Your distributor’s image requirements and the final approval date.

Price, scope, schedule, revision rounds and usage rights are confirmed for each job. Sending a request does not place an order. Our contact form is in Swedish, but you are welcome to write in English.

Questions about cover design

Are social media images included?

Not automatically. List the uses and formats you want so they can be confirmed in the quote together with the single cover itself.

Do I get the editable design files?

That has to be agreed. Ask which final and source files are delivered and which usage rights come with the order.

Where can I find Spotify’s current artwork requirements?

On Spotify’s official cover art requirements page, linked under sources. Also check your distributor’s own instructions before uploading.

Official instructions

Read the current version before delivery. Platform instructions can change.
