Mixing acoustic music without losing the performance

An acoustic recording can rely on detail, breath and natural changes in level. Tell us which parts matter musically and what is an unwanted recording problem.

Is this the right request for you?

You record singer-songwriter material, acoustic pop or a small ensemble and want a mix that starts from the performance.

Not automatically included

New instrument takes, comping many alternatives and extensive restoration are not automatically included. Describe those needs before work starts.

Show how the recording was made

Say which musicians played at the same time and which tracks belong to the same performance. If vocals and guitar were recorded together, each microphone may pick up both sources. Tell us what to prioritise when fully independent changes are not possible.

Send a simple rough mix and a list of the chosen takes. If a room or audience microphone matters for the feel, label it as an intentional part of the arrangement rather than a spare alternative.

Separate musical closeness from distracting noise

Breaths, finger noise and string squeaks can add intimacy but can also take up too much space. Mark examples with timecodes and explain what you want to keep. A general instruction to remove all noise can conflict with the character of the performance.

If there is traffic noise, clipping or a recurring click, describe it in your request. Not every recording problem can be removed without affecting the music. Sometimes a new take is the better next step.

Decide how natural the mix should feel

Choose references that show the closeness, space and amount of processing you want. Say whether the vocal should feel like a live performance or more produced. Tuning, obvious timing edits and extra effects should not be left as unspoken assumptions.

Judge whole phrases and transitions, not only the strongest chorus. Collect feedback on the same version and confirm whether the job ends with a mix or also includes mastering. A connected acoustic album needs to be planned as a whole, separately.

Checklist for your request

  • A rough mix and which tracks were recorded at the same time.
  • Clearly labelled main, close and room microphones.
  • Chosen takes and any editing needs.
  • References for closeness, space and amount of processing.
  • Timecodes for noises and the final versions you want.

Price, scope, schedule, revision rounds and usage rights are confirmed for each job. Sending a request does not place an order. Our contact form is in Swedish, but you are welcome to write in English.

Describe your project and ask about a plan

Questions about mixing

Do vocals and guitar need to be recorded separately?

No. Describe how the recording was made and send a listening example. If sources bleed into several microphones, that affects which independent changes are possible.

Can mixing remove all room sound?

That cannot be guaranteed. Send an example and say which sounds bother you. Whether they can be treated has to be weighed against the effect on the performance itself.

Can I ask for little or no tuning?

Yes, describe the amount of editing you want in the brief. Naturalness and intentional variation are musical choices that need to be clear before work starts.
